If you have been seeing the viral watermelon seed drink all over social media, here is an easy way to prepare it at home.
Instead of throwing away or overlooking watermelon seeds, this recipe turns watermelon seed kernels, also known as magaz, into creamy little nutrition cubes that you can keep in the freezer. Whenever you want the drink, simply drop a cube or two into a glass of water, stir and enjoy.
Watermelon seeds naturally contain protein, fats and minerals, including magnesium, making them a nutrient-dense addition to the diet.
To prepare a batch, you will need:
Place 250 grams of watermelon seed kernels in a large bowl.
Add approximately four times their quantity of water and leave them to soak overnight. The viral recipe uses this overnight-soaking method before blending the seeds.
By morning, the seeds will be softer and much easier to blend.
Drain away the soaking water and rinse the seeds once with fresh water.
Transfer the soaked watermelon seeds to a blender.
Add a little fresh water and blend until you get a smooth, creamy, milk-like mixture. Add water gradually rather than pouring too much at once. You want the consistency to remain fairly thick.
Pour the blended mixture into a saucepan and place it over low heat.
Cook for around 1–2 minutes, stirring continuously. The original preparation also calls for gently heating the blended seed mixture rather than vigorously boiling it.
Turn off the heat and allow it to cool slightly.
Now add:
Mix everything well.
You can also add a few drops of lemon juice if you prefer a slightly tangy, refreshing taste.
The combination of cumin, mint and coriander makes the otherwise rich watermelon-seed mixture much fresher and easier to drink.
Once the mixture has cooled completely, pour it into an ice-cube tray.
Freeze until completely solid.
Your watermelon seed cubes are now ready.
This is one of the cleverest parts of the recipe because you don’t have to prepare the drink from scratch every time.
Whenever you want to drink it:
The viral version suggests having the drink about twice a week.
Watermelon seeds are much more than something to discard.
They contain a useful combination of plant protein, healthy fats and minerals such as magnesium, making them an interesting ingredient for smoothies, seed milks and homemade drinks.
This homemade drink can therefore be a convenient way to add a nutrient-dense seed to your regular diet.
Mint and coriander also give the drink a fresh flavour, while roasted cumin makes it pleasantly savoury.
