Healthy, strong hair does not depend only on the oils, masks and serums that you apply from the outside. Your everyday diet also plays an important role in supplying your body with the protein, minerals, healthy fats and antioxidants needed to maintain normal hair growth.
If you are looking for a simple homemade drink that can become part of your regular hair-care routine, try this black raisin, black sesame and amla drink.
The preparation is extremely easy. Simply soak black raisins (munakka) and black sesame seeds overnight, and the next morning mix them with amla powder. The soaking process softens the ingredients and makes them much easier to blend and consume.
Black sesame seeds provide healthy fats, plant protein and minerals, while munakka adds natural sweetness and nutrients. Amla is especially popular in traditional Indian hair-care routines and is naturally rich in vitamin C and antioxidant compounds.
This drink isn’t a miracle cure for hair loss, but when consumed as part of a nutritious, protein-rich diet, it can be an easy way to add more nutrient-dense foods to your routine.
For one serving, you will need:
If your munakka contains large seeds, you can remove them before blending the drink the next morning.
Take 1 Tbsp black sesame seeds and 5–7 black raisins in a clean glass or small bowl.
Add approximately 1 cup water.
Cover the glass and leave the sesame seeds and raisins to soak overnight, preferably for 7–8 hours.
By morning, the raisins will become plump and soft, while the sesame seeds will also soften slightly.
The next morning, do not throw away the soaking water.
Transfer the soaked black sesame seeds, munakka and soaking water to a blender.
If your raisins contain seeds, remove them first.
Blend everything for around 30–60 seconds, or until you get a smooth drink.
Now add 1 tsp amla powder.
Blend once again for a few seconds.
If the drink is too thick, add another ¼–½ cup water until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Pour it into a glass and consume it fresh.
You can prepare this drink 3–4 times per week.
It can be consumed in the morning along with breakfast or between meals. There is no special requirement to drink it on an empty stomach.
Because munakka is naturally sweet, you generally do not need to add sugar or honey.
If you are trying the drink for the first time, start with a smaller quantity of amla powder, such as ½ tsp, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.
Also remember that no single drink can compensate for a diet lacking in protein. For healthy hair, regularly include protein-rich foods such as dal, beans, paneer, curd, soy, nuts and seeds in your meals.
Always use plain, unsweetened amla powder rather than a product containing added sugar, flavouring or preservatives.
Prepare only one serving at a time and drink it fresh instead of storing it for several days.
If you have diabetes or need to closely manage your blood sugar, remember that raisins contain concentrated natural sugars, so portion size matters.
People who experience acidity or stomach discomfort after consuming amla should reduce the amount or have the drink alongside food.
Most importantly, persistent hair fall should not automatically be treated as a nutritional problem. Significant hair shedding can have many causes, including genetics, stress, illness, hormonal changes, thyroid disorders or iron and other nutrient deficiencies
