A good nighttime skincare routine does not always have to involve an expensive collection of creams and serums. Sometimes, a few simple ingredients can be combined to create a rich overnight treatment that helps dry, tired-looking skin feel softer, smoother, and more comfortable by morning.
This Vaseline Clove Night Gel is an easy DIY beauty treatment made with petroleum jelly, diluted clove oil, almond oil, rosehip oil, vitamin E, and a little jojoba oil. Vaseline works mainly as an occlusive, meaning it forms a protective layer over the skin and slows down moisture loss while you sleep. This can be especially useful for dry areas that tend to look rough or dull.
Clove oil is the star ingredient in this recipe, but it is also extremely concentrated. For that reason, only a tiny amount should be used. Clove essential oil contains eugenol and has antioxidant properties, but applying concentrated clove oil directly to the skin can cause significant irritation. In this recipe, one drop is dispersed through a relatively large amount of oils and petroleum jelly.
The additional plant oils provide emollient fatty acids and help give the mixture a softer, serum-like texture. Used carefully, this overnight blend can leave the skin looking more moisturized, supple, and naturally radiant.
You will need:
Start by making sure your mixing bowl, spoon, and storage container are completely clean and dry. Since this recipe does not contain water, keeping water out of the mixture helps reduce the chance of contamination.
Take 2 Tbsp Vaseline in a small bowl. If the petroleum jelly is very firm, place the bowl in a slightly warm water bath for a minute or two. Do not heat it directly. You only want to soften the Vaseline enough to make mixing easier.
Add 1 tsp sweet almond oil and 1 tsp jojoba oil. Stir slowly until the oils are evenly incorporated into the petroleum jelly.
Next, add 1/2 tsp rosehip seed oil.
Pierce one vitamin E capsule with a clean pin or scissors and squeeze its contents into the mixture. Stir again until the texture becomes smooth and glossy.
Finally, add only one drop of clove essential oil.
Mix thoroughly for at least one minute so that the clove oil is distributed as evenly as possible throughout the entire mixture. The finished night gel should have a soft, balm-like texture that melts easily when it touches the skin.
Transfer the mixture into a clean, dry container with a tightly fitting lid. Keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
Before using this DIY on your face, perform a patch test. Apply a tiny amount to a small area of skin, such as the inner forearm, and wait at least 24 hours. Do not use the mixture if you notice burning, persistent redness, itching, swelling, or irritation.
At night, cleanse your face thoroughly and complete the rest of your normal skincare routine first.
Take only a rice-grain to pea-sized amount of the Vaseline Clove Night Gel. Warm it between your fingertips and gently press a very thin layer onto dry areas of the face.
You can concentrate particularly on areas that tend to lose moisture easily, such as the cheeks or around the jawline.
Avoid applying the mixture very close to the eyes, eyelids, nostrils, or lips, because clove essential oil can be irritating.
You do not need a thick coating. Vaseline is highly occlusive, so a thin layer is enough.
Leave it on overnight and cleanse your face gently the following morning.
For most people, it is better to begin with 1–2 nights per week rather than using it every night. If your skin tolerates it well and benefits from the additional moisturization, you can adjust the frequency according to your skin’s needs.
People with very sensitive, reactive, eczema-prone, or currently irritated skin should skip clove oil altogether. Also avoid applying the DIY over broken skin or immediately after strong exfoliating acids, peels, waxing, or other treatments that may leave the skin sensitive.
This Vaseline Clove Night Gel is best thought of as a rich moisturizing overnight treatment rather than a miracle anti-aging remedy. Consistent sun protection, gentle cleansing, good moisturization, adequate sleep, and proven skincare ingredients remain far more important for maintaining healthy-looking skin. But when used carefully and in a very diluted concentration, this simple DIY can be an enjoyable addition to a nighttime routine for skin that needs an extra layer of softness and moisture.
