Dryness, dullness and a rough skin texture can make the face look older than it really is. While no homemade remedy can permanently remove wrinkles or stop the natural ageing process, keeping the skin well moisturized can make fine lines look softer and give the face a smoother, healthier appearance.
One simple combination you can try is sweet almond oil and Vaseline. Sweet almond oil is rich in emollient fatty acids that help soften dry skin, while Vaseline forms a protective layer over the skin that reduces moisture loss. When combined with a few nourishing oils, they make a rich overnight beauty balm that is especially useful for dry or mature-looking skin.
This DIY is best used at night, when you don’t mind having a slightly richer layer on your face.
If your skin is very oily or acne-prone, skip the aloe-and-oil mixture and use only a tiny quantity of the finished balm after patch testing.
Take 2 Tbsp Vaseline in a clean, completely dry bowl.
Place the bowl in a larger bowl containing warm water for a minute or two. You don’t need to completely melt the Vaseline; simply soften it enough to make mixing easier.
Add 1 Tbsp sweet almond oil and mix thoroughly until the oil is evenly distributed throughout the petroleum jelly.
Next, add 1 tsp rosehip seed oil and 1 tsp jojoba oil. Continue stirring until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
Add ½ tsp vitamin E oil and mix again.
If you want a lighter, more gel-like preparation for immediate use, you can mix in 1 tsp pure aloe vera gel. However, because aloe vera contains water and this DIY contains no preservative, make only a very small quantity, keep it refrigerated and use it within a few days. For easier storage, simply leave the aloe vera out and use it separately before applying the balm.
Transfer the finished mixture into a clean, dry container with a tightly fitting lid.
At night, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry.
If you are using aloe vera, apply a very thin layer of aloe gel first and allow it to absorb for a minute.
Take only a pea-sized amount of the almond oil and Vaseline balm. Warm it between your fingertips and gently press it onto areas that tend to become dry, such as the cheeks, around the mouth, forehead and neck.
You can also apply a tiny amount beneath the eyes, but keep it away from the lash line and avoid getting it inside your eyes.
Do not apply an excessively thick layer. Vaseline is highly occlusive, so a very small quantity is usually enough.
Leave it on overnight and wash your face normally the following morning.
Start by using it 2–3 nights a week. If your skin enjoys richer products, you can gradually use it more frequently.
Always patch-test the mixture before applying it over your entire face, particularly if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.
