Use this for 21 days to get soft, smooth skin

Dryness, rough texture and loss of softness can make the skin look dull and make fine lines appear more noticeable. If you love simple DIY skincare, this Vaseline, baby oil and clove night balm is an easy treatment you can prepare at home using commonly available ingredients.

Vaseline forms a protective layer over the skin that reduces moisture loss, while baby oil helps soften and smooth dry skin. Cloves contain naturally occurring antioxidant compounds, but because they can be irritating when used directly on the skin, this recipe uses only a very mild clove-infused oil rather than applying clove powder or concentrated clove essential oil.

We will also add almond oil, rosehip oil and vitamin E to make the balm richer and more nourishing.

Ingredients Required

  • Vaseline petroleum jelly – 2 Tbsp
  • Baby oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Sweet almond oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Whole cloves – 2
  • Rosehip seed oil – 1 tsp
  • Vitamin E oil – ½ tsp or oil from 1 vitamin E capsule

Procedure

Step 1: Prepare a Mild Clove-Infused Oil

Pour 1 Tbsp sweet almond oil into a small heat-safe bowl.

Lightly crush 2 whole cloves using the back of a spoon. Do not grind them into a fine powder.

Add the crushed cloves to the almond oil.

Place the bowl over another bowl or saucepan containing hot water and allow the oil to warm gently for about 10 minutes. The oil should become warm, not extremely hot.

Remove it from the heat and leave the cloves in the oil for another 20–30 minutes.

Strain the oil carefully so that no clove pieces remain.

Step 2: Make the Night Balm

Take 2 Tbsp Vaseline petroleum jelly in a clean bowl.

Add:

  • 1 Tbsp baby oil
  • 1 tsp of the prepared clove-infused almond oil
  • 1 tsp rosehip seed oil
  • ½ tsp vitamin E oil

Mix everything thoroughly for 2–3 minutes until you get a smooth, glossy balm.

Transfer it to a clean, completely dry container with a lid.

How to Use

Use this treatment preferably at night.

Clean your face and remove all makeup, sunscreen and dirt.

Take only a very small amount of the balm—about the size of a grain of rice for each area.

Rub it between your fingertips and gently press it onto areas that tend to become dry, such as:

  • Around the mouth
  • Cheeks
  • Forehead
  • Neck
  • Hands
  • Dry elbows

You can also apply your regular moisturizer first and use a tiny amount of this balm as the final sealing layer.

For oily or acne-prone skin, avoid covering the entire face with a thick layer. Use it only on dry areas and see how your skin responds.

Start by using it 2–3 nights per week. If your skin tolerates it comfortably, you can use it more frequently.

Benefits of the Ingredients

  • Vaseline: Petroleum jelly is an excellent occlusive. It forms a protective barrier that helps prevent water from escaping from the skin, making dry skin feel softer and smoother.
  • Baby Oil: Baby oil is commonly based on highly purified mineral oil. It helps reduce moisture loss and gives dry skin a soft, silky feel.
  • Cloves: Cloves naturally contain compounds such as eugenol with antioxidant properties. In this DIY, only a very diluted clove infusion is used because stronger clove preparations may irritate sensitive skin.
  • Sweet Almond Oil: Almond oil contains fatty acids that help condition dry and rough skin and improve its overall softness.
  • Rosehip Seed Oil: Rosehip oil contains naturally occurring fatty acids and antioxidants and is commonly used in skincare to support smoother, healthier-looking skin.
  • Vitamin E: Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and also helps condition dry skin, making it a useful addition to an oil-based night treatment.

Important Tips

Always do a patch test for 24 hours before applying the mixture to your face, especially because cloves can irritate some skin types.

Never add several cloves, clove powder or undiluted clove essential oil directly to your Vaseline.

Avoid applying the balm very close to the eyes, on broken skin or immediately after exfoliating.
