Glowing skin is not about using dozens of products—it often comes down to keeping the skin hydrated, protected, and well cared for consistently. If you enjoy simple DIY skincare, you can prepare two different gels at home: a Rice & Almond Gel for daytime and a Beetroot Night Gel for nighttime.
The daytime gel is lightweight and soothing, with rice water, aloe vera, and a small amount of almond oil to help the skin feel soft and moisturized without making it excessively greasy. At night, the beetroot gel adds a naturally rosy tint while ingredients such as aloe vera, rose water, and vitamin E help moisturize dry, tired-looking skin.
Here is how to prepare both.
Start by washing the rice thoroughly to remove dust and impurities.
Add the clean rice to half a cup of filtered water and allow it to soak for around 30–60 minutes. Gently rub the rice between your fingers a few times before straining the cloudy rice water into a clean bowl.
Take about 1 tablespoon of this rice water and combine it with aloe vera gel.
Add the rose water, glycerin, cucumber juice, and sweet almond oil.
Finally, add a few drops of vitamin E oil.
Whisk everything together until you get a smooth, lightweight gel consistency.
Transfer the gel to a clean, airtight glass container.
Every morning, cleanse your face and pat it dry.
Take a small amount of Rice & Almond Day Gel and gently massage it over your face and neck until absorbed.
Allow it to settle for a few minutes before applying your regular broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Because the recipe contains fresh ingredients and no cosmetic preservative, prepare only a small quantity, keep it refrigerated, and ideally use it within 3–5 days. Discard it sooner if the smell, colour, or texture changes.
The result is a simple daytime moisturizer that can leave your skin looking fresh, hydrated, and naturally dewy.
At night, the skin does not need to deal with makeup, sunlight, and environmental exposure in the same way it does during the day. This makes bedtime a convenient time to use a richer moisturizing gel.
Beetroot gives this DIY gel its beautiful natural pink colour and contains betalain pigments and antioxidant compounds. The amount used should be kept small, however, as concentrated beetroot juice can temporarily stain the skin.
Wash and peel a small piece of fresh beetroot.
Grate it finely and squeeze it through a clean muslin cloth or fine strainer to extract the juice.
You only need about 1 teaspoon.
In a clean bowl, add the aloe vera gel.
Mix in the rose water and glycerin.
Now add the beetroot juice little by little while stirring. The gel should turn a soft pink rather than a very dark red.
Add sweet almond oil and vitamin E oil. If your skin tends to feel dry at night, you can also add half a teaspoon of jojoba oil.
Whisk thoroughly until the mixture becomes smooth and evenly coloured.
Transfer the Beetroot Night Gel into a clean airtight container and refrigerate.
At night, wash your face thoroughly to remove sunscreen, makeup, oil, and dirt.
Apply a thin layer of Beetroot Night Gel over your face and neck.
Massage very gently for about 30–60 seconds, then leave it on overnight.
Wash your face normally the following morning.
If beetroot leaves too much colour on your skin or pillowcase, reduce the amount of beetroot juice in your next batch.
Use the Rice & Almond Gel in the morning, followed by sunscreen, and the Beetroot Gel at night after cleansing.
With regular use, the main benefit of these gels is better hydration and softer, more supple-looking skin—which can naturally make your complexion appear smoother and more radiant.
Remember that homemade skincare does not contain the preservation systems found in commercial cosmetics. Always use clean utensils, refrigerate fresh preparations, make small batches, and patch-test both gels before applying them to your entire face.
For daytime skincare, never rely on rice, almond oil, aloe vera, or any other DIY ingredient for sun protection. Finish your morning routine with a proper broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.
