The way we groom our eyebrows can have quite an impact on our overall looks. Defined eyebrows look flattering and make one look much better. The most common way of shaping the eyebrows is by threading. It is also known as epilation. This practise is believed to be originated in India, several years ago. Today, this method of defining eyebrows is popular all over the world. It gives the most precise looks and edge according to one’s preference.
What is threading?
Being the most common technique, it is widely used in parlours to remove hair from various parts of the body. Threading is most commonly used to get rid of the fine hair present on the upper lips, and on the sides of the cheeks. It is also used to give shape to eyebrows by first removing the excess hair and then creating a defined line.
Epilating makes use of a long piece of thread which is twisted several times from the middle and used in scissoring motion to pull out the hair.
You too can do your own eyebrows at home. To begin with this, you need to determine what kind of shape you want for your eyebrows. You can find this out by assessing your face shape.
Different face shapes
Square shape face
A square-shaped face is quite angular with evident facial boundaries. The jaw bone is much defined and just like the chin, the dimensions of the face resemble a square.
Oval face shape
The forehead is wider than the chin and the face is symmetrically round but slightly longer.
Round face shape
A round face will have rounded cheekbones and the forehead, as well as the chin area, is of the same width. A round face usually appears small.
Heart-shaped face
A typical heart-shaped face is one with a wide forehead but narrow cheeks. The lower face appears triangular with a slightly pointed chin.
Long/rectangular face shape
A long or rectangular face is vertically extended. The sides of the face are longer than the width.
How to determine the face shape?
It is fairly easy to determine your own face shape. To do this, pull back your hair tightly and wrap then at the back of your head so that your entire face is visible. Now look into the mirror and focus on your cheekbones as well as the forehead. You will be able to clearly see the dimensions of your face and determine your face shape.

| Threading is much more painful than waxing. | Both threading and waxing are highly effective because they tug at the roots of the hair. However, the pain factor depends upon the individual threshold. It is important to be regular with the process. You can thread your eyebrows as soon as you see fine hair growing back. This will reduce the pain to a great extent and speed up the process. |
| Threading is only meant for the eyebrows. | Threading can be done in various areas of the body. It can be used to remove facial hair as well. The only reason, it is not used do remove hair over legs and arms is because it is a more time-consuming process. Waxing is swift and covers more area. |

Frequently asked questions
Why do I get tiny bumps on the area after threading?
This is a common problem for people with sensitive skin. However, the tiny bumps may not be caused due to threading but due to the astringent of cleaning liquid used to wipe the eyebrows clean.
How can these bumps be prevented?
Do not use any antiseptic or astringent to remove the excess powder. After you are done, place an ice cube over your eyebrows to soothe the area. This will help to avoid those bumps altogether.
Is there any way to lessen the pain of threading?
Before doing your eyebrows, place an ice cube or a cold spoon over your eyebrows. Make sure you wrap the ice cube in a zip lock bag in order to keep the area dry. Ice will numb the area and reduce the pain.
Is waxing a better method for defining the eyebrows?
Some people prefer waxing over threading. While waxing works equally well, it cannot be done at home. You must never attempt putting wax over your eyebrows and pulling. This can go wrong. If you wish to opt for waxing, then do consult a professional.
How often does threading need to be done?
This depends upon your hair growth. If your hair grows back faster, then you will have to do your eyebrows often. Usually, this needs to be done once every 3 weeks.
