Vaseline Clove Overnight Glow Gel

If your skin has been looking dull, dry, or tired lately, the fix might already be sitting in your bathroom cabinet. Plain Vaseline is one of the most reliable moisture-sealers there is, and when you whip it into a light gel with a few well-chosen natural ingredients, it turns into a nourishing overnight treatment that leaves skin soft, smooth, and glowing by morning.

This DIY gel pairs Vaseline with aloe vera, clove, vitamin E, and rosewater. Below you’ll find exactly what each ingredient does, how to make the gel, and — just as importantly — what it can and can’t do for your skin.

Why These Ingredients Work

Before you make anything, it helps to know why the recipe is built this way. Every ingredient here has a job.

Vaseline (petroleum jelly) is an occlusive. That means it forms a thin protective layer on the surface of your skin that dramatically slows water loss overnight. It doesn’t sink in or “feed” the skin — it works entirely on top — but that seal is exactly what keeps skin plump, hydrated, and less prone to dryness and flaking. It’s also gentle and non-irritating for most people.

Aloe vera gel lightens the whole formula. On its own, Vaseline is heavy and greasy; whipping in aloe gives it a softer, more spreadable gel texture. Aloe is also soothing and hydrating, which makes this a calming treatment for skin that feels tight or stressed.

Clove brings antioxidants to the blend. Its active compound, eugenol, helps defend skin against the everyday oxidative damage that dulls your complexion over time. A little goes a very long way here — clove is potent, so we use just a couple of drops, well diluted.

Vitamin E oil is a skin-conditioning antioxidant that helps the gel feel silky and keeps the oils in the recipe from going off quickly.

Rosewater adds a light hydrating, toning touch and a gentle natural scent.

Together, these give you a treatment that seals in moisture, soothes, and adds a layer of antioxidant support — a recipe for softer, healthier-looking skin with regular use.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons Vaseline (petroleum jelly)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh aloe vera gel (or pure store-bought aloe gel)
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (or the contents of 2 vitamin E capsules)
  • 1 teaspoon rosewater
  • 2 drops clove essential oil (no more — clove is strong)

A small clean bowl, a whisk or fork, and a clean airtight jar to store it in.

How to Make the Gel

  1. Add the Vaseline to your bowl. If it’s stiff, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes or warm the bowl slightly so it softens.
  2. Whip the Vaseline with a fork or small whisk for a minute or two until it turns lighter and fluffier in texture.
  3. Add the aloe vera gel a little at a time, whisking as you go, until the mixture becomes smooth and gel-like.
  4. Mix in the vitamin E oil and rosewater.
  5. Add exactly 2 drops of clove essential oil and stir thoroughly so it’s evenly distributed. Even distribution matters — you don’t want a concentrated pocket of clove touching your skin.
  6. Transfer to a clean jar. Stored somewhere cool and dry, it keeps for about 2 to 3 weeks.

How to Use It

Use this gel at night, after cleansing. A pea-sized amount is plenty — Vaseline is rich, and a thin layer works better than a thick one. Warm it between your fingertips and massage gently over your face, avoiding the eye area. Leave it on overnight and rinse with a gentle cleanser in the morning.

Two to three nights a week is a good starting rhythm. Because Vaseline is occlusive, it works best on clean, slightly damp skin where it can seal in the moisture that’s already there.

Realistic Expectations (Please Read)

This gel is genuinely good at what it does: sealing in moisture, soothing, and giving skin a soft, hydrated glow. With consistent use, skin looks smoother and more radiant, and fine lines can look softer simply because well-hydrated skin appears plumper.

What it won’t do is build collagen, erase wrinkles, or permanently fade dark spots — no topical DIY gel can do that, and any recipe promising it is overselling. The glow here comes from hydration and barrier support, which is a real and worthwhile benefit, just not a miracle one. Pairing this nighttime gel with a daily broad-spectrum SPF will do far more for long-term skin aging than any single ingredient in this jar.

A Few Important Cautions

  • Patch test first. Clove is a common skin sensitizer. Before putting this on your face, dab a little on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours. If you see redness, itching, or irritation, don’t use it.
  • Keep the clove low. Stick to 2 drops for this batch size. More is not better, and too much clove can cause irritation or a burning sensation.
  • Skip it if you’re acne-prone. Vaseline can trap oil and debris, which may worsen breakouts on acne-prone or very oily skin. If that’s you, this particular gel isn’t your best match.
  • Avoid the eye area and rinse well if any gets in your eyes.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Check with your doctor before using clove essential oil.
