Vaseline and alum stone for younger-looking skin: what I actually do

Two things have been in my mother’s dressing table for as long as I can remember: a tin of Vaseline and a small chunk of alum stone wrapped in muslin. Both cost less than a fancy serum. Both keep showing up in reels promising younger-looking skin in two weeks.

Here’s the thing. They do help. Just not in the way most of those reels are telling you.

Let me walk through what’s actually happening on your skin, how I use both of these, and which other kitchen-shelf ingredients I keep going back to.

What Vaseline does to ageing skin

Vaseline is petroleum jelly. It has no vitamins, no peptides, no antioxidants. It sits on top of your skin and stops water from evaporating out. That is its entire job.

Why does this matter for older skin? As we age, the outer barrier gets leakier. Skin loses water faster, looks dull, and fine lines become more obvious because dehydrated skin creases where hydrated skin would smooth out. Put a thin layer of Vaseline over a well-hydrated face at night and you wake up with skin that looks plumper and softer. The internet calls this slugging.

I do it about three nights a week. Cleanser, then a hyaluronic acid serum or rose water, then my regular night cream, then a pea-sized smear of Vaseline patted on the spots where lines bother me most (forehead, eye corners, around the mouth). The pillowcase has to be changed often because the residue does transfer.

What Vaseline will not do: fade pigmentation, build collagen, or reverse sun damage. Nothing in the tub can do those things. People who say Vaseline is anti-ageing are really saying that well-hydrated skin looks younger than dehydrated skin. Which is true. But it is not the same as turning back the clock.

Skip the slugging if your skin is acne-prone or very oily. The seal can trap things you’d rather have evaporating off your face.

Alum stone: what fitkari is actually doing on your skin

Alum is potassium aluminium sulphate, a mineral salt used across India for shaving, deodorising, and skin tightening for centuries. Dampen the stone, glide it gently over clean skin, rinse. That’s the whole technique.

The effect people notice is a kind of tightening. Pores look smaller. Skin feels firm and a bit polished. This happens because alum is astringent, meaning it causes a temporary contraction in the surface tissue. Combined with its mild antibacterial action, you get a face that looks calmer and tighter for a few hours.

I want to be honest about one thing. The tightening is temporary. It is not lifting your skin or fixing sagging. By tomorrow morning everything is back to baseline. But if you’re going to a wedding, or you have a long workday, the freshness is real and useful.

How I use it: twice a week, never daily. After cleansing I wet the stone, glide it over my T-zone and jawline, leave the residue for about two minutes, rinse with cool water, and immediately follow with aloe gel or a hydrating serum. Without that follow-up, my skin feels stripped. Some people get redness, so do a patch test on your jaw before going anywhere near your full face.

My desi anti-ageing routine, simplified

Morning is short. Splash water, aloe vera straight from the plant if I have it (the bottled kind is fine, just check the ingredient list for added fragrance and alcohol), a vitamin C serum, moisturiser, sunscreen.

Sunscreen is the one thing I will not skip. If I had to pick a single product that actually slows visible ageing, it is SPF. Everything else is supporting cast.

Night is where the kitchen ingredients come in. I rotate based on what my skin is doing.

On a dull day, I use rice water as a toner after cleansing. The starch contains inositol and a small amount of ferulic acid. The brightening effect is mild but consistent over weeks.

On a tight, dehydrated day, honey mixed with a few drops of milk, left on for ten minutes. Honey is a humectant, milk has lactic acid. Wakes the skin up.

On a slugging night, my serum and cream go on first, then the Vaseline. Sometimes I use pure ghee instead because ghee has actual vitamin A and K, which Vaseline does not. Ghee is heavier and smells, so I keep it for weekends.

Twice a week the alum stone comes out, always followed by a hydrating mask or thick aloe.

Other natural ingredients worth keeping

Rose water. A mild astringent that breaks up the heaviness of oil-based products beautifully. Look for steam-distilled, not rose-fragranced glycerin water.

Almond oil. A few drops on the eye area at night. Vitamin E, light enough not to sting if it migrates into the eye.

Aloe vera. Calms everything, holds water in the skin, layers well under any other product.

Green tea. I sometimes brew a strong cup, chill it, and use cotton pads soaked in it as a five-minute compress on tired eyes. The polyphenols help with redness and puffiness.

Yogurt. The lactic acid mildly exfoliates. Mix with besan if you want a scrub, leave on for ten minutes, rinse.

What I stopped doing

Lemon on the face. The pH is too acidic, sun sensitivity goes up, and I have seen too many friends end up with patchy hyperpigmentation from this. There are gentler ways to brighten skin.

Daily turmeric masks. Once a week is plenty. Daily turmeric leaves a yellow undertone that takes weeks to fade, and the brightening you’re hoping for can be done by lactic acid in yogurt without the staining.

Toothpaste on pimples. I am not sure why this keeps coming back as advice. It burns and dries the surrounding skin and makes scarring more likely.

Coconut oil on my face. My skin is combination and it broke me out every time. It works beautifully for some people. For me it didn’t.
