If your skin is feeling dehydrated, dull, or showing the first signs of fine lines, this lightweight DIY serum blends three classics—clove, flaxseed, and rosewater—into a soothing, plumping base that many skin types love. Clove brings antioxidant support, flaxseed delivers a silky, water-binding gel, and rosewater calms and lightly tones. Layer in helpers like glycerin, aloe, and vitamin E, and you get a fast-absorbing, budget-friendly serum that supports glow, bounce, and a smoother look—without a complicated routine.
(All commonly available at grocery/medical stores or online)
Whole flaxseeds – 2 tablespoons
Rosewater (pure, food/cosmetic grade) – ½ cup / 120 ml
Whole cloves – 6–8 (or clove essential oil, 1–2 drops total in the full batch; do not exceed)
Aloe vera gel (plain, no added fragrance) – 2 tablespoons
Vegetable glycerin – 1–2 teaspoons
Vitamin E oil (from a capsule) – 4–6 drops
Optional boosters: a pinch of pink salt (0.1–0.2 g) to improve slip, or ½ teaspoon rosehip oil for extra nourishment (better for normal–dry skin)
Make flaxseed gel.
Add 2 tbsp flaxseeds to 1 cup (240 ml) of water. Simmer on low, stirring, until the liquid thickens slightly and trails off the spoon in thin threads (about 6–8 minutes). Strain immediately through a fine strainer or clean muslin while hot to collect a smooth gel.
Infuse rosewater with clove (gentle method).
Warm ½ cup (120 ml) rosewater until just steamy (do not boil). Drop in 6–8 whole cloves, cover, and let steep 10–15 minutes. Strain. (Alternatively, skip this step and later add only 1–2 drops total clove essential oil to the full batch.)
Blend the base.
In a sanitized bowl, whisk together:
3 tbsp warm clove-rosewater,
2 tbsp flax gel, and
2 tbsp aloe gel
until uniform and slightly viscous.
Add humectants and antioxidants.
Whisk in 1–2 tsp glycerin and 4–6 drops vitamin E. If you didn’t make a clove infusion, add only 1–2 drops clove essential oil now (total for the entire batch), whisking thoroughly to disperse.
Bottle & chill.
Transfer to a clean pump bottle. Refrigerate. Use within 10–14 days (this is a low-preservative, water-rich formula). For longer storage, make half batches more frequently.
Patch test first. Apply a dab to the inner forearm or behind the ear for 24 hours—especially if you’re sensitive, pregnant, nursing, or prone to dermatitis. Clove can be strong; keep concentration very low.
When to apply: On clean, slightly damp skin after cleansing/toning, morning and/or night.
How much: 2–3 pumps or a pea-sized amount for face and neck.
Layering: Follow with your regular moisturizer or a few drops of a non-comedogenic facial oil.
Sun care: Morning use should always be followed by a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+).
Storage: Keep refrigerated; avoid dipping fingers into the bottle to reduce contamination.
Tips by skin type
Oily/combination: Use 1 tsp glycerin (not 2) and skip rosehip oil.
Dry/mature: Use the full 2 tsp glycerin and add ½ tsp rosehip oil.
Sensitive: Skip the clove infusion and use just one drop of clove essential oil in the whole batch—or omit clove entirely and rely on flax/rose/aloe/glycerin.
Deep hydration and bounce. Flax mucilage and glycerin draw and hold water in the outer skin layers, giving a plumper, dewy look and softening the appearance of fine lines.
Antioxidant support. Clove and vitamin E help defend skin lipids, supporting a healthier-looking barrier and a brighter, more even appearance.
Soothing, refined feel. Rosewater offers a gentle, refreshing astringency and comforting scent, while aloe contributes cooling slip and helps calm visible redness.
Supple, smoother finish. Consistent use of humectants (glycerin, flax gel) plus antioxidants (vitamin E, clove) supports moisture balance and a visibly softer, less “crinkly” look over time.
Keep clove very dilute; more is not better and may irritate.
If you experience redness, stinging, or breakouts, rinse off and discontinue.
Because this is a kitchen-made, water-rich serum with minimal preservation, small refrigerated batches are best.
