Are you tired of trying rice water hair treatments and seeing no real results? Frustrated by endless YouTube videos claiming miracles, yet your hair remains unchanged? This may be the only rice water recipe you’ll ever need—the original method used by the legendary Yao women of China.
Yao women are renowned for their incredibly long, thick, jet-black hair that doesn’t grey even into old age. Their secret? A unique, fermented rice water recipe passed down through generations. This traditional method not only helps prevent premature greying but also promotes new hair growth and strengthens hair from the roots.
Let’s dive into the authentic process.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Use a ceramic, glass, or earthenware jar—never plastic or metal, as they can interfere with the fermentation process. A glass pitcher works perfectly.
Add 2 cups of sticky white rice into the jar. Then, pour in 4 cups of clean, fresh water (always maintain a 1:2 rice-to-water ratio).
Add: ¼ cup of chopped ginger, Fresh orange peels (from 4 small oranges), 5 green tea bags (or ¼ cup of green tea leaves)
Drop in 5 drops of rosemary essential oil. Traditionally, Yao women use thyme or sage leaves, but rosemary oil is an excellent alternative that promotes scalp health and hair regrowth.
Gently stir the mixture using a wooden or ceramic spoon. Cover the jar with a breathable cloth or lid.
Fermentation Time:
In warm climates: leave it at room temperature for 3 days
In cooler climates: ferment for 5 days
The liquid will gradually shift from a brownish tone to a milky white or cream color as it ferments. Don’t worry about any strong smell—thanks to the orange peels and rosemary oil, the final fragrance is surprisingly pleasant and refreshing.
After fermentation, mix the solution well and strain it. You can use the rice water in two effective ways:
Prevents Premature Greying: Thanks to antioxidants in green tea and orange peels
Stimulates Hair Growth: Ginger and rosemary oil boost blood circulation in the scalp
Strengthens Roots: Fermented rice protein nourishes and fortifies hair
Adds Shine & Thickness: Continued use results in glossy, fuller hair
