Dragon fruit comes from the genus Hylocereus of the Cactaceae family. It is also known as pitaya, nannetika fruit, strawberry pear and pitahaya. The names pitahaya and pitaya are derived from Mexico. Pitaya refers to the fruit of the genus stenocereus, while pitahaya refers to the fruit of the genus Hylocereus. The other names for this fruit are dragon scales, dragon crystal, dragon pearl fruit and green dragon. Some of these fruits have red or yellow skin, which looks a little like pineapple, and white or red pulp with an abundance of small, black and edible seeds. They are round and oval in shape. The weight of this fruit ranges from 150 to 1000 grams, although more commonly they range from 150 to 600 grams.

This fruit is mildly sweet and low in calories. The seeds of this fruit are rich in lipids. Also, it has zero cholesterol and is full of antioxidants. It is high in fibre and vitamin C. It contains various fatty acids like myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, cis- vaccenic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid. It is used to add flavours to juices and alcoholic beverages. It is eaten in salads and various dishes. The flowers of this plant can be eaten as it is. The pitaya plant is a climbing cactus. The flower of this plant blooms overnight. They rely on pollinators such as bats and moths for fertilization.  This plant produces flowers between three to six times a year, depending on environmental conditions. The plant can endure temperatures up to 40 degrees Celcius, but will not survive long exposure to freezing temperatures. The fruit sets on the cactus-like trees 30 to 50 days after flowering and sometimes even have 5 to 6 cycles of harvests per year.

They are cultivated in the United States, Southeast Asia, Israel, Australia, Cyprus and the Canary Islands. The flowers can drop and fruits can rot due to overwatering or excessive rainfall. Bacteria like Xanthomonas campestris causes the stems to rot.

Types of the dragonfruit plant:

  1. Hylocereus undatus: it is also known as pitaya Blanca or the white-fleshed pitaya. The skin of this fruit is pink in colour and it is the most commonly found type of this plant.
  2. Hylocereus costaricensis: it is also called pitaya Roja or the Hylocereus polyrhizus. Both the skin and the pulp of this fruit are red in colour.
  3. Hylocereus megalanthus: it is known as pitaya Amarilla or the selencereus megalanthus. The skin of this fruit is yellow while the pulp is white in colour.

  2. Make a smoothie using this fruit, spinach leaves, yoghurt or milk and bitter gourd. Drink it twice a week in the morning.

  1. Make a hair pack using the pulp of this fruit, curd and lemon.
  2. Apply this pack on your hair from root to tip and wash it after half an hour with a shampoo.

  2. Then apply it over the affected areas using a cotton ball.

  1. Prepare a mixture of the pulp of this fruit, aloe vera gel and honey.
  2. Apply it on your elbows, armpits and knees and let it sit for 20 minutes.

Ans. These fruits are ripe when the skin of the fruit is even in colour and the wings are a mixture of yellow and green and the edges start to turn brown in colour. But, If the peel has dark spots, it may be overripe. If the peel is a combination of green and red, it’s not yet ripe.
