Rice Water Toner: Shrink Large Open Pores, Get Glass Skin

Rice water has been a beauty staple across Asia for generations, prized for the way it softens rough texture, balances oil, and leaves skin with a translucent, almost “glass-like” glow. When you ferment rice water for 24 hours, natural peptides and mild organic acids develop, boosting its brightening and pore-refining power. In this updated formula we replace specialty actives (witch hazel, niacinamide) with pantry favourites—apple-cider vinegar and fresh cucumber juice—without compromising results. Together with green tea, rose water, aloe-vera gel, vitamin E, and a whisper of tea-tree essential oil, the blend gently tightens enlarged pores, calms redness, and hydrates so skin can reflect light smoothly and evenly.

Ingredients Required (≈ 100 ml)

  • Fermented rice water – 50 ml

  • Strong green-tea infusion (cooled) – 30 ml

  • Diluted apple-cider vinegar (1 part ACV : 3 parts water) – 10 ml

  • Pure rose water – 5 ml

  • Fresh cucumber juice – 1 tablespoon

  • Aloe-vera gel – 1 teaspoon

  • Vitamin E oil – 5 drops

  • Tea-tree essential oil – 2 drops (optional for acne-prone skin)

All items are easy to find at a supermarket, pharmacy, or online grocery store.

Procedure

  1. Ferment the rice water

    • Rinse ½ cup of white or brown rice to remove excess starch.

    • Cover the grains with 1 cup of filtered water and let soak for 30 minutes.

    • Strain the liquid into a clean jar, cover loosely, and leave at room temperature for 24 hours until it smells faintly tangy.

    • Refrigerate to slow further fermentation.

  2. Brew green tea

    • Steep 1 teaspoon of loose leaves (or one tea bag) in 100 ml of 80 °C water for 5 minutes.

    • Remove the leaves and let the infusion cool completely.

  3. Prepare cucumber juice

    • Blend half a peeled cucumber until smooth.

    • Pour through a muslin cloth or fine sieve to collect the clear juice.

  4. Blend the toner

    • In a sterile glass bottle, combine the fermented rice water, cooled green tea, and cucumber juice.

    • Add the diluted apple-cider vinegar, rose water, and aloe-vera gel; stir until the gel dissolves.

    • Drop in vitamin E oil and, if desired, tea-tree essential oil.

    • Seal and shake well to emulsify.

  5. Store safely

    • Keep the bottle refrigerated and use within two weeks, or add a broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative if you need a longer shelf life.

Instructions for Use

  1. Patch test the mixture on a small area behind your ear or along the jawline for 24 hours to rule out sensitivity.

  2. After cleansing, saturate a cotton pad with the toner or mist it directly onto your face, avoiding the eye area.

  3. Press and pat the fluid into skin until fully absorbed, then follow with serum and moisturiser.

  4. Start once nightly; if no irritation occurs, increase to morning and evening.

  5. Stay consistent—most people notice refined pores and smoother texture within three to four weeks.

  6. Apply sunscreen during the day; the mild acids from fermentation and ACV can make skin more sun-sensitive.

Benefits of This DIY Toner

  • Tightens enlarged pores through the gentle astringency of diluted apple-cider vinegar and peptide-rich fermented rice water.

  • Balances oil and calms redness with cucumber-juice flavonoids and soothing green-tea catechins.

  • Reveals “glass-skin” radiance by lightly exfoliating with natural organic acids while replenishing moisture via rose water and aloe-vera gel.

  • Strengthens the skin barrier thanks to antioxidant vitamin E and aloe-vera polysaccharides.

  • Keeps breakouts in check when tea-tree oil is included, helping reduce acne-causing bacteria.

  • Cost-effective and sustainable—all eight components are inexpensive staples, and the recipe repurposes rice-soak water that would otherwise be discarded.

Incorporate this toner into your daily routine and, with steady use, you’ll see pores appear smaller, sebum levels more balanced, and a smooth, light-reflective finish worthy of the coveted glass-skin trend.
