Rice Potato Night Cream: Better Than Anti-Ageing Creams
If you love simple, kitchen-friendly skincare, this glow-boosting night cream brings together rice, potato, aloe, and glycerin to deeply hydrate, soften texture, and support a brighter, calmer-looking complexion—without a complicated routine. Rice is rich in soothing starches and antioxidant compounds, while potato offers vitamin C–rich polyphenols. Paired with barrier-loving humectants and light oils, you get a gentle gel-cream that feels plush yet non-greasy. As with all DIY skincare, patch test first and keep it refrigerated; this is a fresh blend, not a preserved commercial product.
Ingredients Required
(All common and easily available; quantities make ~50–60 g jar)
-
2 tbsp thick rice gel (from starchy cooked rice water; see procedure)
-
1 tsp fresh potato juice (strained very fine; see safety notes)
-
1½ tbsp pure aloe vera gel (store-bought, fragrance-free)
-
1 tsp vegetable glycerin (USP grade)
-
½–1 tsp sweet almond oil (or jojoba oil for acne-prone skin)
-
1 capsule (400–800 IU) vitamin E oil (optional antioxidant/emollient)
-
1 tsp rose water (optional, for slip and scent)
-
Pinch of rice flour (optional, to slightly thicken if needed)
Procedure
-
Make the rice gel: Rinse ¼ cup white rice; simmer in 1½ cups water until the water turns cloudy and lightly viscous (8–10 minutes). Strain out the rice and continue simmering the liquid until it thickens to a loose gel. Cool completely.
-
Prepare potato juice: Peel a small potato, grate, and squeeze the pulp through a very fine cloth; strain again to remove particles. Use only the clear juice; discard any green parts of the potato.
-
Blend the base: In a clean bowl, whisk 2 tbsp cooled rice gel with 1½ tbsp aloe gel until uniform.
-
Add actives: Whisk in 1 tsp glycerin, ½–1 tsp almond (or jojoba) oil, and the contents of 1 vitamin E capsule. If using, add 1 tsp rose water.
-
Finish: Whisk in only 1 tsp potato juice. If too runny, sift in a pinch of rice flour and whisk until silky.
-
Jar & chill: Transfer to a sterilized 60 g glass jar. Refrigerate. Use within 5–7 days.
Instructions
-
Patch test first: Apply a tiny amount to the inner forearm for 24 hours—especially important if you have reactive skin or nightshade sensitivities.
-
Night use: After cleansing and toner/essence, apply a pea-sized amount to damp skin. Massage gently for 30–60 seconds.
-
Layering: You can seal with 1–2 drops of facial oil if very dry; otherwise this has enough slip for most skin types.
-
Frequency: 3–5 nights per week to start.
-
Storage & hygiene: Always use clean fingers/spatula. Keep refrigerated; discard at any sign of color/odor change or separation.
-
Who should skip the potato step: Anyone with known potato/nightshade allergies or easily irritated skin. You can omit the potato juice and increase aloe by 1 tsp.
Benefits (Why these ingredients work together)
-
Long-lasting hydration & smoother barrier: Glycerin is a classic humectant that pulls and holds water in the outer skin layers, helping the barrier stay plump and comfortable by morning.
-
Rice-derived antioxidants & soothing starches: Rice gel provides a soft, cushioned feel while naturally occurring antioxidants in rice support a healthier-looking complexion and improved elasticity.
-
Aloe’s calming, collagen-supportive role: Aloe vera gel is widely used to soothe, hydrate, and support skin repair, making it ideal for an overnight cream that aims for bounce and comfort.
-
Potato for an antioxidant boost (used sparingly): Potatoes naturally contain vitamin C and polyphenols, which can complement the brightening, tone-evening goals of a night treatment. Because raw potato may irritate some skin types, the formula keeps the amount low and emphasizes patch testing.
-
Light emollients for overnight comfort: Sweet almond (or jojoba) oil and vitamin E add a soft occlusive layer to reduce moisture loss, improving next-morning suppleness and glow.
Important Safety Note
Potatoes can cause irritation for some people, especially if the potato is old, sprouted, or green. Use only fresh, non-green potatoes, keep amounts low, and discontinue if you notice tingling, itching, or redness.
Make it yours: For a fragrance-free version, skip rose water. For extra slip, add another ¼ tsp glycerin (avoid going too high to prevent tackiness). For oily or acne-prone skin, swap almond oil for jojoba and keep layers light.
