Store-bought hair oils often promise the world but deliver mostly fragrance and filler. The good news? Making your own hair growth oil at home is surprisingly easy, and you get to choose every single ingredient. By combining nourishing carrier oils with vitamin capsules from your medicine cabinet, you can create a blend that rivals — and often outperforms — expensive salon treatments.
“Hair loss and slow growth are often linked to nutrient deficiencies, poor scalp circulation, and oxidative stress. A well-formulated oil addresses all three at once — feeding the follicle, stimulating blood flow, and protecting against damage.”
The Base Oils
Carrier oils form the foundation of your blend. Each brings something different to the mix. Choose 2–3 and combine them to your preference.
Castor Oil – 40% of blend
The star of any growth oil. Rich in ricinoleic acid, it boosts scalp circulation and fights fungal buildup. Thick — always dilute with a lighter oil.
Coconut Oil – 25% of blend
Penetrates the hair shaft deeply, reducing protein loss and strengthening strands from within. Antifungal and antibacterial too.
Jojoba Oil – 20% of blend
Mimics your scalp’s natural sebum. Unclogs follicles, balances oil production, and carries other ingredients deeper into the skin.
Argan Oil – 15% of blend
High in vitamin E and fatty acids. Adds shine, tames frizz, and creates a protective layer around each hair strand.
Adding Vitamin Capsules
This is the secret weapon. Vitamin capsules are inexpensive, widely available, and pack an extraordinary amount of active ingredient into your oil. Simply pierce the capsule with a pin and squeeze the contents directly into your blend.
Vitamin E – 2–4 capsules
Powerful antioxidant. Repairs damaged follicles, improves scalp circulation, and neutralises free radicals that cause hair loss.
Vitamin A – 1–2 capsules
Supports sebum production to keep the scalp moisturised. Speeds up cell turnover, encouraging faster hair growth.
Vitamin D3 – 2 capsules
Deficiency in D3 is strongly linked to hair thinning. Topical application helps activate dormant follicles.
Biotin (B7) – 2–3 capsules
The hair-growth vitamin. Strengthens keratin structure and reduces breakage when applied directly to the scalp.
Vitamin C – 1 capsule
Boosts collagen synthesis and aids iron absorption at the follicle level. Use sparingly — it can be mildly acidic.
Fish Oil (Omega-3) – 2 capsules
Reduces scalp inflammation, a leading cause of hair loss. DHA and EPA nourish follicles from the outside in.
Complete Recipe · 100ml Batch
- Cold-pressed castor oil 40 ml
- Virgin coconut oil 25 ml
- Jojoba oil 20 ml
- Argan oil 15 ml
- Vitamin E capsules (400 IU each) 3 capsules
- Biotin capsules (5,000 mcg each )2 capsules
- Vitamin D3 softgels 2 capsules
- Rosemary essential oil (optional) 5–6 drops
How to Make It
Use a dark glass bottle (amber or cobalt blue) — it protects the vitamins from UV degradation. Rinse with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely before use.
If your coconut oil has solidified, place the jar in warm water for a few minutes until it liquefies. Do not microwave or boil — heat destroys nutrients.
Pour the castor oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and argan oil into your glass bottle using a small funnel. Give it a gentle swirl to begin mixing.
Use a clean pin or needle to pierce each capsule. Squeeze the contents directly into the bottle. For gel capsules, you can snip one end with small scissors. Add all chosen vitamins.
Rosemary oil is clinically shown to rival minoxidil for hair growth. Add 5–6 drops. You can also add 3 drops of peppermint oil for extra scalp stimulation.
Seal tightly and shake well for 30 seconds. Store in a cool, dark place. The oil lasts up to 3 months. Shake before every use as the vitamins may settle.
How to Apply It
Partition your scalpDivide hair into sections. Apply oil directly onto the scalp using your fingertips or a dropper — not along the length of the hair.
Massage for 5–10 minutesUse circular motions with your fingertips. This stimulates blood flow to the follicles, which is just as important as the oil itself.
Leave on for at least 2 hoursOvernight application gives the best results. Cover with a shower cap to create warmth, which helps absorption.
Wash out thoroughlyUse a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo. You may need two rounds to remove castor oil fully. Don’t skip conditioner afterwards.
Use 2–3 times a weekConsistency is everything. Results typically show after 6–8 weeks of regular use. Don’t over-oil — it can clog follicles.
Do a patch test firstBefore full application, apply a small amount to your inner wrist. Wait 24 hours to check for any allergic reaction, especially to essential oils.
A note on vitamins A & D: These are fat-soluble vitamins. When used topically in moderate amounts as described above, they are generally safe. However, avoid applying excessive quantities, and do not ingest the oil. If you have a sensitive scalp or skin condition, consult a dermatologist before use.
