A Simple DIY for Softer, Younger-Looking Skin
As we age, the skin naturally produces less collagen and becomes more prone to dryness, fine lines, dullness, and loss of elasticity. While no homemade remedy can literally reverse aging, keeping the skin well moisturized and supporting its natural barrier can make it look smoother, plumper, and healthier.
One ingredient that can be useful in a nourishing nighttime skincare routine is evening primrose oil. Evening primrose oil contains essential fatty acids, especially gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which can help support the skin’s moisture barrier and reduce dryness. Instead of buying an expensive serum, you can use evening primrose oil capsules and mix the oil with a simple night cream or facial oil.
Here are two easy ways to use it.
Option 1: Evening Primrose Anti-Aging Night Cream
Ingredients Required
- 2 Tbsp plain, fragrance-free moisturizing night cream
- 2 evening primrose oil capsules
- 1 tsp pure aloe vera gel
- 1/2 tsp sweet almond oil
- 1/2 tsp rosehip seed oil
- Oil from 1 vitamin E capsule
Procedure
Take 2 Tbsp of your regular fragrance-free night cream in a clean glass bowl.
Pierce 2 evening primrose oil capsules with a clean pin or scissors and squeeze the oil into the cream.
Add 1 tsp aloe vera gel. Aloe vera provides lightweight hydration and gives the mixture a soothing texture.
Next, add 1/2 tsp sweet almond oil and 1/2 tsp rosehip seed oil. Both oils are rich in emollient fatty acids and can help soften dry, rough-looking skin.
Finally, cut open 1 vitamin E capsule and squeeze the oil into the mixture.
Stir everything thoroughly for 1-2 minutes until you get a smooth, uniform cream.
Transfer the cream into a clean, dry, airtight container.
Because this DIY contains aloe vera and introduces extra ingredients into a commercial cream, it is best to prepare a small batch rather than storing it for weeks.
Option 2: Evening Primrose Anti-Aging Facial Oil
If your skin is very dry, you can skip the cream and prepare a simple facial oil instead.
Ingredients Required
- Oil from 3 evening primrose capsules
- 1 tsp jojoba oil
- 1 tsp sweet almond oil
- 1 tsp rosehip seed oil
- Oil from 1 vitamin E capsule
Procedure
Add all the oils to a small clean amber glass bottle.
Close the bottle and shake gently until everything is well mixed.
Your nourishing nighttime facial oil is ready.
Unlike the cream version, this mixture does not contain water or aloe vera, so it is generally simpler to store. Keep it tightly closed in a cool, dark place and avoid touching the dropper or bottle opening directly with your fingers.
How to Use
Use this treatment only at night.
Start by cleansing your face and patting it dry. If you use a toner or hydrating serum, apply that first.
For the cream version, take a small pea-sized amount and gently massage it over your face and neck.
For the oil version, apply just 2-3 drops to slightly damp skin. Using more oil will not necessarily give better results and may feel heavy.
Massage gently using upward circular motions for about 1 minute.
Leave it on overnight and wash your face normally the next morning.
You can start by using it 2-3 nights per week. If your skin tolerates it well, you may gradually use it more frequently.
Benefits of This DIY
